Charlie Steel - Monkseaton & Hillheads

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1950, Charlie Steel has lived almost all of his life in Monkseaton.
A pupil at Langley Avenue Primary and Junior Schools in the 1950s and early 60’s, he moved on to Monkseaton County Secondary School, leaving in 1967 to enter the printing trade as a Graphic Artist and Photographer.
After spending eight years in the printing trade, he decided it was time to move on, and joined Northumbria Police in 1974.
His interest in local history stems from his Great Grandfather, George Steel, who was a prominent businessman in Whitley Village at the turn of the century.
Steels Nurseries were situated on Whitley Road (Now Park View) opposite St Paul's Church and occupied the land between what is now the Fat Ox and Ivy Court. He also owned land at West Park, Hillheads.
Much of the Steel family history is featured in a book entitled Whitley Bay, by John Alexander, published by Sutton in 2000.
Charlie has written several local history articles for the ‘Northumbrian’ magazine, but has a particular fascination with the history of Monkseaton and Whitley Bay, as a result of which he decided to compile his first book – Monkseaton & Hillheads, published by Tempus in 2000.
Charlie is currently working on his second book about Monkseaton, which will be a more in-depth history, and will depict many of the old characters and people, the streets, buildings and businesses, from the past up to the present day.
As the developers move in and slowly eliminate much of our history, Charlie found it important to try and preserve our past heritage and memories in the best possible way – Pictures and Photographs, which he believes should be shared with everyone.

Monkseaton and Hillheads

This fascinating collection of over 150 photographs portrays Monkseaton and the surrounding villages.
Monkseaton is situated half a mile inland of the Tyneside coastal resort of Whitley Bay which it pre dates although it has be dwarfed in the urban regeneration over the centuries.
The village has a long and historic past of which very little has been written, with old photographs being rather scarce.
During the 17 & 1800's some of the outlying farms encompassed the area known as Whitley Hill Heads, New York, Murton and Earsdon, all of which have been included and depicted in this book.
Through the medium of these old photographs Monkseaton's past is brought to life giving the reader a wonderful glimpse into a bygone age.
The photographs used have been drawn from a private collection, many of which have never been seen or published before and span a period of over 100 years.
